Amelia Axford

BA Textile Design

Amelia Axford has just completed her final year in BA Textile Design (IND) specialising in woven design. In recognition of her ability, Axford was granted a Highly Commended Scholarship from the Weaver’s Company. The textiles have been designed to bring a textural warmth into the home, inspired by Charleston Farmhouse.

This final woven collection is a profusion of textiles that brings personal warmth and joy into the home. Textural warmth, colour play, and movement were all critical aspects inspired by the art found in Charleston. The key to achieving these was through the revival of rep weave.

Axford aims to synergise practical and decorative textiles to invoke warmth within historical and contemporary interiors. This combination of natural materials and woven structures allows for Axford’s work to be multi-functional, as seen in this tablecloth that is usable also as a wall hanging.

The grounding inspiration for this project is drawn from Charleston Farmhouse and Gardens, a 17th-century Sussex farmhouse. The Bloomsbury Group moved here in 1916. Finding a way to express their want of freedom was important and was carried out by painting their life ‘on’ Charleston, the walls, doors, and all other surfaces. The house is the art.
