My practice explores the presentation and symbolism of what it means to grow from girlhood to womanhood. Communicating a universal perception of the changes women go through emotionally, physically and spiritually. Delving into the intricate relationships between women and nature in capturing the expressions of this transformation through metaphorical illustrations and a narrative coupled with symbolic imagery. I drew inspiration from historical depictions of women in art, particularly within Greek mythology, my work explores the majestic power of femininity in conjunction with flora and fauna.
The focus of my project is a desire to challenge and reframe traditional conceptions of womanhood. My research led me to the archetype of the “fallen woman”, a figure often associated with negative connotations of disgrace and failure but here reimagined as a symbol of rebirth. In the painting, the girl is depicted falling through the sky, a visual metaphor for the descent into self-discovery and vacating of girlhood. This imagery evokes religious themes, reminiscent of fallen angels, yet it aims to celebrate and highlight the transformative potential of a fall.
The complexity and interconnectivity between girlhood and womanhood is something I explored through the use of colourful and delicate illustrations to embody the strength and subtly of female power. The book serves as a narrative for universal recognition of this change, I aimed to honour the inherent value of femininity sensitivity, warmth, empathy, strength, resilience and power. Seeking to counter stereotypes that confine women by showcasing the strength that can be found in vulnerability. The book becomes a vessel for these personal stories, evoking dream-like qualities, where the lines between reality and memories are blurred. The painting and the book should read as a contemplation on the nature of femininity, the fluidity of identity and the presence of our younger selves.
