Degree Show 2024

Willow Arlett

BA Graphic and Communication Design

Throughout my time at university, I developed a passion for advertising, student media, and conducting unhinged schemes where I bite off more than I can chew, from hand-manufacturing 200+ badges to conjuring up a world where Britain has been plunged into darkness. Most were unable to determine what my final pieces would be, I couldn’t have predicted that either.

An average journalism degree cohort is made up of 2/3 female students. However, the media industry’s female staff only make up a 1/3 of its total workforce. They Can’t Be Them Until You See Them is an advertising campaign which urges the media industry to recognise the value of their female workforce in order to inspire the next generation of female journalists. A reel for this campaign can be found on my website.

Travel More, Shop in Store is an advertising campaign that aims to persuade commuters to add a stop to their journey to buy books in a physical bookshop rather than purchasing them online.

This glow-in-the-dark wayfinding system (and subsequent navigation pamphlet) was a response to Born Ugly’s challenge to ‘Pitch the Unpitchable’, adding value to something that currently has none. This speculative design piece is set in a dystopian Britain, where light is in high demand.
